Bethany Bible Camp- precious, eternal human souls
Why does Living Word offer to send her pastor away to do ministry outside her walls a couple times per year? It stems from the conviction that what's good for the kingdom of God is good for Living Word. A rising tide floats all boats.
Going away like this is exhausting to me, as it takes a lot of energy to get ready to go and to come back. Yet God always grants me endurance and provision for the ministry. And I get a healthy dose of perspective. It's good to spend time with other believers from other congregations in other districts- and frankly, even from other denominations.
Bible camp- if run well, and this one is- is a powerful time for all ages. Youth get away and spend time with other students who love Jesus. Adults break away from the rat race and invest extended time with their Lord and in their family. Jesus always works through His Word, but it seems like a change of scenery helps us hear a little bit better.
I wish I could take people along with me every time I hit the road- okay, most every time I hit the road. Here is some fruit from this week, with names changed to protect privacy:
Meghan, who started the week immodestly dressed and indifferent, and is now listening closely to my evening and morning messages.
Steven, who had loose views on the authority of Scripture and the nature of God, has started asking questions that make me think he's re-evaluating.
Jennifer, who is heading to AFLBS next year, has been a blessing to many students, and is encouraged herself as she encourages other believers.
Troy, who spends all day in his back yard listening to his i-pod, has started smiling this week.
Richard, who has a friend that's an atheist now knows how to talk to him, and has a love for his precious eternal human soul.
And that's just what I see. Sometimes the fruit goes deeper. We won't know until eternity.
And now a shameless plug: Bible Camp ministry is getting tougher to facilitate. People are more busy than ever, and each household is working more hours, what with wives joining the work force (81% in South Dakota). We can't lose this vital tool. One key is pastoral participation, though my outside ministry time is booked well in advance. I think I need to help lead the charge to get Living Word "camping," whether it's with families or with youth, like at the ARC or Pickerel Lake.
The blessing of Bible Camp, of course, is more the Bible than the camp. So dig in, enjoy your Savior, and
Go serve your King!
